What should we do if we find a burst pipe?

•If you have no water during a severe frost, check with a neighbor if they have a supply then your pipes maybe frozen

•You should turn off the water at the main stopcock immediately. There could also be another stopcock fitted on the side of the header tank, this should also be turned off.

•Drain your system by flushing the toilet and opening cold taps over sinks and baths (DO NOT TURN ON HOT TAPS AS THIS MAY CAUSE FURTHER PROBLEMS IF THE HOT WATER SYSTEM IS ALSO FROZEN)

•If water is coming through the ceiling collect it in buckets.  If a ceiling is bulging, pierce the plaster to let the water through.

•Turn off all electricity at consumer unit IF SAFE TO DO SO and employ a qualified electrician to check any electrical appliances that may have been affected.

•Once pipes are thawed and you are satisfied that no damage is present and no leaks are detected.  Close any taps you have opened and slowly open the stop tap and check for any leaks.

• DO NOT USE A NAKED FLAME OR BLOW TORCH TO THAW ANY FROZEN PIPES THIS IS A FIRE RISK
